Brighamia Insignis (Hawaiian Vulcan Palm)

Brighamia insignis

[Photos of larger specimens & flowers]

Rare in cultivation and thought to be extinct in the wild, this succulent (not a palm, despite it’s name) used to grow on cliffs in Hawaii and was pollinated by a moth, which is now extinct.

Yellow flowers in late summer.

Light: Bright, indirect light. Not more than an hour of full sun per day.

Water: Likes humidity, but is a succulent so let soil dry somewhat between waterings and water less in winter. We have had good luck watering every two weeks on average in summer and every two to three weeks in winter. Regular misting is helpful.

Temperature: Min 15C.

Important: The above growing specifications are general guidelines. Each home or outdoor area has it’s own unique micro-climate which can influence a plant’s growth.
